Claus and Soren first met in 1989 and began writing music. They chanced upon Rene during a recording of a soundtrack for a Danish children's film; Rene later coaxed Norwegian female singer, Lene, to join them in Denmark. They created the band Joyspeed and landed a record deal with a Swedish company.

It was released then the single "Itzy Bitzy" which managed to stay a week on the Swedish charts; this wasn't enough for the group and it decided to break its contract and start over.

The group's name (Aqua) came from a poster that had an aquarium in it, at their studio in Copenhagen, Denmark. So they named the studio "Aquarium". Then the group's name became "Aqua".

Soon, they released their first single under the name Aqua. "Roses Are Red" climbed the charts and created the beginning of something very good. Universal Music Denmark signed in Aqua in April 97, and their first album, Aquarium, was released in June 97.
